INTRODUCTION

Holistic movement analysis
in children and adolescents

Hardly anything is more important for children and adolescents than being able to move freely and without restriction. Yet even walking requires the coordinated interaction of a wide range of muscles, joints, and nerve pathways. This complex interplay can be disturbed by even the smallest dysfunctions, significantly impairing mobility. However, the cause of discomfort and pain is not always located where it is felt. For example, back pain and knee problems may be caused by improper loading and misalignments of the feet, which in turn can lead to changes in overall body posture. Therefore, a holistic view of the musculoskeletal system is essential for a reliable diagnosis.

Advantages

Why is a 4D Motion Lab
useful?

Holistic assessment of the musculoskeletal system

In the 4D Motion Lab, the movement analysis laboratory, the entire body is assessed in a single measurement process — from the feet, through the legs and pelvis, all the way to the spine. The precise presentation in numerical data and clear visual graphics helps to establish a reliable diagnosis.

The 4D Motion Lab is particularly suitable as a radiation-free examination method for children and adolescents who are still growing. The surface measurement with three-dimensional reconstruction of the spine, the video gait analysis for assessing leg axes and foot pressure, as well as the synchronous measurement of the entire musculoskeletal system enable an accurate and holistic evaluation of young patients. This allows abnormalities in movement patterns to be detected quickly and treated accordingly.

If the patient relies on walking aids, prostheses, orthoses, braces, or insoles, or if their walking ability is neurologically impaired, it can be determined whether the current support is optimal or whether there may be more suitable treatment options available.

The 4D Motion Lab can also be used to monitor the healing process after injuries or surgeries, helping young patients get back on their feet as quickly as possible.

Healthy physical growth

Especially during the growth phase, foot deformities and postural weaknesses can occur in children and adolescents. If these are diagnosed early, they can usually be corrected quickly and relatively easily by our specialists. Misalignments in the mechanics of joints involved in gait — such as the foot, knee, hip, or spine — can also be treated with appropriate therapeutic measures when detected early, helping to prevent chronic pain.

Static and dynamic application

With the 4D Motion Lab, the following measurements can be performed — individually adapted to the patient’s symptoms — purely optically and without any radiation exposure, both while standing (static) and during movement (dynamic):

Spinal measurement and analysis

Leg axis measurement and video gait analysis

Pedography (foot pressure analysis)

Spinal measurement

01

Dynamic spinal measurement

The innovative measurement method of the 4D Motion Lab makes it possible for the first time to analyze the spine and posture while walking — using purely optical technology and without any radiation exposure. Abnormalities in movement patterns, such as spinal curvature, vertebral rotation, pelvic alignment, and even muscular imbalances, can be identified and treated in a targeted manner.

02

Video gait analysis

The legs must support our body weight, and the hip, knee, and ankle joints are subjected to considerable stress when walking. Uneven loading, wear, or injuries can significantly impair their function and lead to acute pain. Video gait analysis is used to detect even the slightest misalignments or incorrect movements in leg geometry. This makes it possible to precisely identify issues such as pelvic tilt, movement asymmetries, knock-knees or bowlegs, and flat or valgus feet, allowing for targeted treatment of pain.

03

Dynamic foot pressure analysis

The health of our feet has a significant impact on our overall physical health and well-being. Knee and back problems, as well as headaches, can often be traced back to foot misalignments.

During foot pressure measurement, even the smallest incorrect load patterns of the foot can be identified and corrected through appropriate treatments, such as shoe modifications, custom insoles, or specific training methods. Foot pressure analysis is suitable not only for diagnosing foot pain, but also for knee or leg pain caused by foot posture issues, tendon or joint inflammation, as well as back or headache symptoms.

FUNCTION

How 3D/4D measurement
works

The movement analysis laboratory assesses the entire body — from the feet, through the legs and pelvis, all the way to the spine — within just a few measurement steps. It is a contactless measurement method that works purely optically, meaning without any radiation exposure.

For the measurement, the patient stands in front of a recording unit consisting of a video camera and a projector. The projector casts parallel measurement lines onto the surface of the back, and the video camera transmits the three-dimensional pattern to a computer. The software analyzes the recorded data and determines the shape of the entire back, the spine, and the position of the pelvis.

Postural corrections, such as leg length discrepancies or spinal alignment, can be precisely simulated using a height-adjustable platform. Muscular imbalances — meaning disproportionate coordination between different muscle groups — are also detected during the measurement. The collected measurement data can support therapeutic interventions and typically lead to improved treatment outcomes. In addition, during follow-up examinations, changes compared to previous assessments can be displayed on the computer.
