INTRODUCTION

Non-invasive and minimally invasive examinations for children and adolescents

Instrumental diagnostics encompasses all examination methods performed with technical equipment – from blood pressure measurement and sonography to electrocardiography.

For diagnostic examinations of acquired or congenital diseases of internal organs and tissue structures, imaging procedures are used for visualization in almost all medical specialties. These gentle instrumental examination methods are preferably employed for medical clarification, especially in children and adolescents, as these non-invasive procedures include pain-free examinations.

Types of
instrumental examinations

Cold Light Endoscopy

Cold light endoscopy is a gentle imaging procedure that allows a view into body cavities and hollow organs via a probe. It is used as a diagnostic instrument. For example, nasal cold light endoscopy visualizes the nasal turbinate and nasal passage.

Electroencephalography

Electroencephalography, or EEG for short, measures and records the electrical activity of the brain using small sensors placed on the scalp. This determines how well the different areas of the brain are functioning. Unlike an ECG, an EEG does not show jagged curves, but rather several waves, known as brain waves. The course of these waves depends on the brain’s current activity – whether concentrated or tired, awake or asleep – similar to the electrocardiography of the heart.

Sonography

In sonography, also known as ultrasound or echography, high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) are sent into the body via an ultrasound transducer to generate images of the body’s interior. An image of the tissue generated by ultrasound is called a sonogram.
