Allergy laboratory in Munich
INTRODUCTION
Immunodiagnostics have advanced rapidly in all areas in recent years. Antibodies circulating in the blood are being detected with increasing precision, the sensitivity of testing methods has been continuously improved, and the amount of blood serum required has been minimized.
To ensure that our patients always have access to the latest laboratory technology while achieving ideal sensitivity and the highest accuracy with only a small amount of blood serum, we have been operating our own allergy laboratory for several years.
We use the Phadia 250 analysis device from Phadia Thermo Fisher, the world’s leading provider in the field of allergy diagnostics: 90% of allergy diagnostics worldwide are carried out with this system. Our laboratory is subject to strict quality management and the relevant regulations of the Medical Association. Each year, we perform more than 20,000 RAST and other determinations in our lab.

RAST test (specific IgE)
With the Phadia 250, so-called RAST tests can be performed, which determine within 24 hours whether there are indications of allergic diseases in our patients’ blood.
The primary focus of allergy diagnostics is the detection of specific IgE antibodies using the so-called RAST test. The blood serum is brought into contact with the allergen in the RAST CAP, and the specific IgE that has bound to the allergen is measured.
In addition to the whole allergen, which always contains several different allergy-relevant components, it has also been possible for a few years to measure these individual components of the allergen — in some cases at the molecular level.
As a result of this molecular allergy diagnostics, we can now accurately predict the risk of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) and precisely determine the appropriate therapeutic solution for subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT).

Isac chip diagnostics
Especially in patients with numerous allergies and complex allergic reaction patterns, molecular allergy diagnostics can result in relatively high costs and significant material usage. As an alternative, it is possible to analyze all currently commercially available allergen components (more than 100) in a single blood sample and in just one testing procedure — a method known as ISAC chip diagnostics.

Inflammatory mediators
We also analyze typical inflammatory mediators involved in allergic immune processes, such as mast cell tryptase and eosinophilic cationic protein. This enables assessments of skin changes, supports the preparation of specific immunotherapy, and helps analyze inflammatory processes in the airways.

Celiac disease diagnostics
In particular, the analysis of food reactions can be very complex. In addition to the classic measurement of specific IgE in the RAST CAP, serological diagnostics for celiac disease therefore holds an established place in our work.
In addition to diagnostics for typical food allergies (such as hen’s egg, cow’s milk, etc.) and classic celiac disease, our focus is particularly on evaluating hard-to-classify food reactions such as WDEIA (wheat-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis) or non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Our allergy laboratory service goes far beyond mere sample processing.
We offer our network partners and referring colleagues a truly comprehensive full service. We provide guidance in selecting allergens and analytical methods, organize sample transport, and transmit the results to the referring practice — gladly also via fax notification. Most importantly, we support the interpretation of the findings and offer concrete solutions for affected patients. If desired, we are also happy to contact the patient directly to obtain an allergy history and provide allergy counselling.
