PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

Pediatric neurology – often referred to as child neurology – includes a very wide range of spectrum of diseases. It treats congenital and acquired disorders of the brain, nerves and muscles, which can all, show very different symptoms and disease patterns. This is why we rely on strong interdisciplinary teamwork when anamnesis and diagnosis is performed.

DISEASE PATTERNS

Pediatric neurology focuses on the not fully developed nervous system of babies, children and teenagers. Depending on the stage of development, disorders or damages can occur which are age specific and different from neurological diseases of adults

This is why we especially treat general development abnormalities such as motor, linguistic and mental disorders, learning and performance disorders as well as development disorders including mental retardation and behavioral disorders.

Pediatric neurology also focuses on chronically physical diseases. This includes:

  • Cerebral seizure/epilepsies
  • Chronic diseases of the central nerve system (neurometabolic, neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS): Multiple sclerosis
  • Neurological attendance of the development of chronical internistical disease patterns (cardiac diseases, gastroenterological disease patterns including disorders in development, diabetes, lung diseases)
  • Vertigo, syncopes
  • Headaches/migraine
  • Nerve and muscle diseases
  • Movement disorders/cerebral palsy (dystonies, ataxias)
  • Vertigo, syncopes
  • Mental and physical disabilities
  • Congenital deformations of the brain and spinal cord (spina bifida, hydrocephalus and others)
  • Medical assistance of pre-mature and full-term neonates who suffer from severe complications during babyhood.
  • Genetic diseases (i. E. Down syndrome, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis and others.)
  • Sequelae after severe accidents

  • ENG (electroneurography =measurement of nerve conductions)
  • Evoked potentials in order to check acoustic-, optic- and fumble nerve conductions (AEP = acoustic, VEP = visual and SSEP = somatosensory)
  • Polygraphy

The M1 Diagnosis Center offers state-of-the-art technical equipment. We closely work together with the departments of radiology, orthopedics, cardiology, pulmonology, allergology, ENT, gastroenterology, nephrology and endocrinology, in order to be able to answer the complex questions concerning pediatric neurology and to make individual concepts for treatments.

THERAPEUTIC OPTIONS

A wide range of treatment is offered, depending on the diagnosis. They predominantly are: The requirement for an anticonvulsive, medication long-term treatment is the right diagnosis and the precise classification of the epilepsy. Over the last 20 years great progress has been made in the field. Especially the new antiepileptics offer new chances to be free of seizures in the medicational treatment of epilepsy and they are tolerated more. Occuring side effects are often spotted at the beginning of the treatment or at the times of overdosage and in the majority of cases they are reduced through dose escalation respectively or dose reduction. A trustful doctor-patient relationship is a crucial corner stone in the treatment of epilepsy.

 

Accompanied treatments from the fields of physiotherapy, ergotherapy, logopedics, orthopedagogy and others should help the ill children to support their development, to eliminate or ease limitations and to avoid further damages.

When suffering from movement disorder, a medication with botulinim toxin is recommended.

Not least, measures such as dietetic treatment, gen therapy and also surgical treatment can be promising. In addition we provide clarification and consulting concerning possible arising social law claims.
